DAY 1: fOCUS ON TODAY

We say this with the utmost respect and empathy, but welcome to the T1D club you NEVER asked or wanted to be a part of, especially for your child. To say you are likely overwhelmed is an understatement. You might be brokenhearted, devastated, or even relieved that you finally found an answer to help your little one. You will have a lot of things thrown your way- education, other test results, implementing immediate life saving medicine- all while you are processing an emotional rollercoaster of results. Denial, sadness, and grief could be amplifying and clouding your typical logical state.

We want to encourage you to trust your medical team, lean in to taking care of yourself, be present with your child, pray, and focus on getting through today only. Tomorrow can focus on tomorrow, next week will focus on next week, next month, next year…but for today, focus on today alone.

Day 1 Goal: Focus on Today.

Day 1 or the following days, you will need to:

  1. Tell your child that they have Type 1 Diabetes in an age appropriate way

  2. Take care of yourself physically, emotionally, etc.

  3. Let your closest community know what is going on- ask for prayer

  4. Start to understand what medicines your child is on

  5. Remember you are grieving and to offer yourself grace and space to do so

  6. Find a blood tracking log that works for you
